Life Sciences Companies Get Millions in Tax Breaks

Marlborough life sciences companies are two of three in central Massachusetts getting the breaks, creating hundreds of jobs.

Two life sciences companies in Marlborough are among those getting a piece of $19 million million from the state in tax incentives.

The Waltham-based Massachusetts Life Sciences Center announced on Thursday that its board is giving $19 million breaks to 11 life sciences companies in the state. In total, the recipients said it should create some 1,075 jobs.

Established in 2008 as part of a $1 billion initiative, the program authorizes incentives every year for those companies engaged in life sciences research and development, commercialize ion and manufacturing. The primary goal is for these companies to create jobs.

Marlborough’s GE Healthcare Bio-Sciences Corporation is receiving an incentive amount of $3,150,000, and predicts creating 175 new jobs with it.

GE last August announced its move to Marlborough and an investment in a 160,000 square-foot facility, reported the Worcester Business Journal. At its maximum operation, it’ll bring in more than 500 workers and 220 jobs to the region.

Quest Diagnostics, also based in Marlborough, was given $900,000 in the incentive doling, which should result in some 50 jobs for the company.

Other companies receiving breaks include Biogen in Cambridge, SMC in Sterling and Philips Electronics in North America.

“Massachusetts’ life sciences sectors are the fastest-growing sectors of our economy,” said Gov. Charlie Baker in a statement. “We will continue to build on that success and maintain our competitive edge as the global leader in life sciences.”
