Officials Urge Waltham Residents: Clean Your Catch Basins

With heavy rain already causing problems in Waltham, officials are reminding residents to be on the lookout for debris that covers the catch basins.

“Yes you can call the city to clear them,” said the announcement, “but there are more than 3,300 catch basins throughout the City of Waltham and we cannot get to all of them.”

To prevent flooding, residents can remove the debris from the top of and around the catch basin grates. It is recommended that you stand on the curb and use a rake to clear the leaves, limbs and debris.

“Do not attempt to remove the grate, only the debris on top of the grate. The debris that is removed should be placed in your trash or in a place where the debris will not get washed back into the street by the rain.

The best time to inspect the storm drain in front of your house or business is before a rain storm. Monitor and clean the catch basin in the fall when the trees are shedding their leaves. Should you need assistance, please call 781-314-3855.”
