Oil Spill In Charles River In Waltham Draws Hazmat Response
The spill happened around 4:30 p.m. in the river near the Shaws supermarket.

WALTHAM, MA — Boston police and Waltham fire officials were still gathered in Waltham near the Charles River into Wednesday investigating and trying to contain an oil spill, police confirmed.

Around 4:30 p.m. emergency services were called to 130 River St (behind the Shaw's) for a report of a hazmat incident. As of 6 p.m., Waltham Police confirmed it was still an active situation, with fire officials still on the scene.

Early dispatch radio reports indicated an oil spill in the Charles River nearby. Police radio requested companies respond to a full hazmat situation with a spill trailer, boats and requesting DEP to the scene, too.
Whenever an incident involves the river, State Police have jurrisdiction, a spokesperson for the Waltham Police department told Patch. We have reached out to the State Police and to the Waltham fire department for comment.

This isn't the first time there's been a serious hazmat situation in the Waltham stretch of the river. In 2015, some 4,000 gallons of cable oil spilled into the river, Wicked Local reported at the time.
