The call came in late Thursday night before midnight to Waltham Police originating with 911 where two men traveling Trapelo Rd west at Marlboro Rd reported seeing three white men crossing Trapelo Rd, two with rifles, one with a scope, and the third man having a hand gun secured to his thigh, were headed into the Fernald property at a grassy area below where the Shriver Building once stood. The two men in the passing car turned around and on return saw flashlights in the field heading up towards the high woods in the back of the property and called 911.
Waltham Police would search the property by land with cruisers and spot lights and by air after a problem finding an available police drone operator was finally solved an hour later and no trace of the three intruders could be found by the drone, sent up from the Fernald main road by the parking lot into Shriver.
The intruders could possibly be inside buildings considered to be too unstable to enter by police.
A search of the Marlboro Rd neighborhood had Police showing interest in a Budget rent a van that was unmanned and parked on a corner by Ivaloo Rd with Oklahoma plates.
The three men seen crossing Trapelo Rd wore bandannas over their faces, one having curly hair and another with a ball cap.
