Conductor Hit By Train In Waltham

The train's conductor somehow slipped and sustained a serious leg injury when the train hit him, according to the MBTA Police.

WALTHAM, MA — A train conductor on a Fitchburg commuter train fell off the platform in Waltham and was struck by the train, Monday afternoon. The 29-year-old Keolis employee is in the hospital with what MBTA police describe as a serious leg injury.

"Right now they're telling me it's non-life threatening, but a serious leg injury," said MBTA Transit Police Superintendent Richard Sullivan.

The incident happened at the station near Brandeis around 4 p.m. and slammed traffic back to 117, and caused about a 30 minute disruption in the commuter rail service.

As the Fitchburg train inbound was approaching the Brandeis station, the conductor was doing a customary final visual inspection of the platform as the train approached the platform, when he fell.

"Somehow the conductor lost his footing and fell off the train. And as a result of that he sustained a serious left leg injury," said Sullivan.

The man had worked as a conductor for the past two years, was taken to a Boston Hospital for emergency treatment.

MBTA Transit Police are investigating what caused the conductor to lose his footing but don't suspect foul play.

"We do not believe this is intentional. It looks like it was just a terrible accident," said Sullivan who took a moment to expressly thank the Waltham Police for their help with traffic and at the scene.
