Looking To Rent On Social Media? Look Out For Scams, Waltham Police Say

Residents have reported scams involving their hunt for a rental property on social media, police said.

WALTHAM, MA — Waltham residents have made multiple reports to police of being scammed while viewing real estate rental listings, police said.

Local police are now warning the public of the uptick, which has been based largely on social media.

"We have received several reports of people being scammed after viewing rental listings. Many of these scammers ask that potential new tenants secure a viewing by sending money in Venmo, Zelle, or CashApp," police said.

"They then attempt to get even more money or will not respond to the victim altogether. Please be careful in your search for housing."

Officials said anyone who believes they have been scammed should contact the Waltham police.
