Remembering Sr. Dorothy Cooper, Founder of Neighbors Who Care

“It is with deep sadness that we announce that Sr. Dorothy Cooper SGM, founder of Neighbors Who Care in Waltham, MA passed away from the Covid 19 virus on Tuesday, April 14,” John Peacock, board chair announced. “Because of Sr. Dorothy’s vision and dedication, Neighbors Who Care was begun in 2003 to care for isolated/lonely elders by pairing them with a long-standing volunteer—all at no charge.” Sr. Dorothy’s vision has flourished for 17 years providing thousands of hours of care to elders within the greater Waltham communities.
“Sr. Dorothy will always be remembered for her strong faith and belief that if we do the work, our ministry will flourish,” said Executive Director, Martha Ryan “Today our volunteers remain in touch with their clients by providing support, shopping if necessary and just letting them know they have a friend who cares.”
One Neighbors Who Care client who knew Sr. Dorothy said, “I know we have one more angel in heaven to look after us. Sr. Dorothy’s vision of Neighbors Who Care helped me know I was not alone and that I was able to connect back to the community and do the things I used to love doing, all with the help of that one person who let me know that I mattered.”
“Sr. Dorothy’s passing leaves an ache in our hearts but we are grateful for having helped carry forth her vision,” said Peacock and Ryan.
