Small Business Spotlight: Fitness Together Weston - Waltham

Fitness Together is a private one on one personal training studio located on the Weston Waltham line.

WALTHAM, MA — Just past the corner of Bear Hill Road and Main Street there's a brick building with blue and white sign that says "Fitness Together," the owner of the personal training studio is a former Military Police Officer who discovered a passion for fitness while he was in the Army National Guard.

Mark Migliorini bought the franchise along the Waltham and Weston border two years ago and has been working to help people work on weight loss, or strength gain and improved mobility and flexibility ever since.

"I love fitness and helping people change their lives through exercise," he told Patch in a Q&A as part of the small business Saturday feature.

PATCH: Tells us a bit about you and your business:

I am a certified functional strength coach and the owner of Fitness Together Weston - Waltham. I graduated from Assumption College 2010 with my bachelors degree in Organizational Communications. After college I joined the Army National Guard where I served as a Military Police Officer for 3 years. It was during my time there that I discovered my passion for fitness and have been training ever since. Fitness Together is a private one on one personal training studio located on the Weston Waltham line. We specialize in helping clients with weight loss, building or re-gaining strength, and improved mobility / flexibility. Our private training sessions are 45 minutes long and the entire time is spent with a trainer. We build a customized workout plan specifically for you to meet your goals. All our trainers are certified and share the same passion for fitness. Whatever your goals may be, we are here to help you achieve them.

When did the business open?

2004

What made you decide to go into this type of business? And why here? Like many, I put on some weight during my college years. I exercised occasionally, but never with much success. I decided to try a personal trainer and it changed my life. Working with a professional completely changed my outlook on fitness. I enjoyed it so much that I wanted to make a career out of it.

What do you like best about it? By far the best part is helping someone get back a part of their life they thought they have lost. It's amazing what a little exercise can do to improve your everyday life!

Biggest struggle? Learning to delegate work to employees. When you own your own business you want everything done perfectly so it's easy to over load your plate. Learning to pass out some of the everyday tasks to the other trainers is crucial but tough at the same time.

What do you see for the future? I see the fitness industry largely expanding. There is so much research being done on how daily exercise prevents many diseases and illnesses that plague us everyday. I hope one day it will be prescribed by doctors and more widely covered by insurance.

Politics and business - how does it affect yours? Having only owned for two years I have not seen any affects yet. I know the industry took a large hit back in the recession around 2008. Unfortunately one of first things people cut from their budgets is fitness and wellness. It's looked at as a luxury rather than necessity.
