Students Evacuated At Waltham School: All Clear After Smoke Smell

Students and teachers evacuated the Wittemore school just after 10 a.m. Tuesday. Officials searched the building for the source of smoke.

WALTHAM, MA — By 10:50 a.m., Tuesday, nearly an hour after students and teachers at the Whittemore Elementary School evacuated following the report of smoke in the building at 10:10 a.m., the building was cleared by fire officials, according to scanner reports.

The school evacuated as soon as the alarm went off and everyone was accounted for and safe, according to scanner reports. By 10:40 a.m. students and staff were still outside and officials were investigating where the smell of smoke could have originated. Though it was believed to be near the cafeteria.

Electricity was shut down at the school and an electrician was slated to repair the building. Meanwhile, officials were talking about sending students to the McDevitt school, according to the early reports, but were slated to return to their own school by 11 a.m.
