Upper Charles River Greenway Path Is closed

Just for two weeks, the path is closed for renovation. Look for the detour signs.

WALTHAM, MA — Runners, cyclists, walkers beware: The Upper Charles River Greenway path is closed. For the next two weeks part of the path is slated to undergo repair work, including repaving. This is the first time the path has been fully repaved since it was installed more than a decade ago, according to the State.

"Over the years, temporary fixes and patchwork has been done to ensure the pathway remains safe and accessible for users, but this will be its first full-scale overhaul," said Mark Steffen, the Department of Conservation and Recreation media representative in an email to Patch.

The Department of Conservation and Recreation have closed the path between Elm Street and Farwell Street, they announced. "The work is designed to provide a restored path to better serve multiple users of this section of the Upper Charles River Greenway," according to a press release. Look for nearby detours.

Work is limited to grinding down and repaving the pathway. Surrounding the project, path users may see seeding and loaming activities occur, which are meant to mitigate the effects of construction equipment on surrounding vegetation, but that will not change the route or continuity of the existing pathway, said Steffen.

The DCR anticipates a cost of $190,000 to complete the project, coming out of the agency’s Trail Repair Capital Program.
