Viewfinder: Waltham's Grove Hill Cemetery

Local cemetery brings Waltham history alive.

Most know of the Grove Hill Cemetery is located at 290 Main St. The cemetery was founded in 1703 and initially called The Old Burial Ground.

The Waltham Historical Society offers tours through the cemetery every once in a while. Visit the site to learn when the town's expert, a Waltham High School teacher, gives those tours.

You don't have to wait to take a tour. Take a photographic tour with our pictures above!

As you scroll through the pictures take note of the old English names that run through Waltham, Weston, Lexington, Concord and a few other colonial cities and towns. There is even one there for a Irish lieutenant who died on April 30, 1775 as a marine for his majesty's army.

Wayne McCarthy, co-president of the Waltham Historical Society, said the burial ground has a few soldiers who fought in the revolutionary war. There is currently a request for Community Preservtion Act money to continue restoring the headstones that date back to the 1703 founding.
