Waltham City Council Puts Stigmatine on Hold: Report

The council tabled the matter Tuesday night per Mayor McCarthy's request, according to a Waltham News Tribune report.

WALTHAM, MA – The Stigmatine deal has been put on hold – for now. The city council tabled the issue Tuesday night per Mayor Jeannette McCarthy's request, according to a Waltham News Tribune report.

The move comes a week after McCarthy requested taking the 46-acre Stigmatine Fathers & Brothers property by eminent domain. The site has been eyed as the preferred location for a new Waltham High School.

Eminent domain would allow the city to take the property for public use and award compensation – in this case, to the tune of $15 million to the Stigmatine trustees. The Stigmatine Congregation in Rome, which owns the land, has said that 30 acres of land on the property could be sold to the city, but it wishes to keep the portion that houses the espousal center and other buildings, according to a previous Waltham News Tribune report.
