Kanode, assistant principal of Stanley Elementary School, died early this morning surrounded by loved ones, Superintendent Echelson said.

WALTHAM, MA – Steve Kanode, assistant principal of Stanley Elementary School, passed away early Wednesday morning after a years-long battle with cancer.
Waltham Superintendent of Schools Drew Echelson announced Kanode's passing in a letter to the school district, in which he said Kanode died peacefully and surrounded by loved ones.
"In the short time that I had to get to know Steve, I appreciated and respected how much he loved the Waltham Schools. He cared deeply for the educators, students and families with whom he worked," Echelson wrote.

Kanode, a former teacher in the Newton Public Schools system, was first diagnosed with a brain tumor in February of 2013. In the subsequent years, his fellow educators and members of the Stanley community rallied around him through GoFundMe campaigns and school fundraisers.
"He has certainly left an indelible mark on our system," Echelson wrote. "Steve also cared deeply about his family. As we reflect on Steve’s impact, I encourage everyone to keep his family and loved ones in our thoughts and prayers."
