Waltham Firefighters Place 1st in MS Climb to the Top

Saturday's climb at 200 Clarendon Tower raised money for the National Multiple Sclerosis Society.

WALTHAM, MA – Waltham firefighters took their support for multiple sclerosis research to new heights over the weekend, placing first in the 2017 Climb to the Top Boston.

On Saturday, Deputy Fire Chief Cliff Richardson and firefighters Tom Leard, Steve Hopkins, Tim Mahoney and Mark Chiasson climbed 61 flights of stairs to the top of New England's tallest building – 200 Clarendon Tower in Boston.

It was Hopkins that solidified the victory for WFD, finishing the challenge in 14 minutes and 46 seconds. In total, 59 firefighters from 12 different departments participated in the climb.

"This was a fun event and we’re always honored to raise money for causes like multiple sclerosis," Hopkins said in a statement. "Everyone did a great job and we look forward to participating again next year."

Leard placed third at 15:44, Mahoney earned seventh at 16:03, Chiasson netted 12th with a time of 18:08 and Richardson rounded out the pack at 13th with a time of 18:26.

The firefighters raised a total of $3,560 for the National Multiple Sclerosis Society. The fundraising event came off the heels of the American Lung Association's Fight for Air Climb, during which Waltham firefighters raised $2,490.
