Waltham High Tables New Class Schedule: Report

The school district has been considering a shift from eight daily class periods to seven.

WALTHAM, MA — Although Waltham High School’s class bells were supposed to start ringing at new times, there’s been pushback from parents – so WHS is sticking with its current schedule of classes for now.

Superintendent of Schools Marisa Mendonsa has “paused” the proposed change from eight daily class periods to seven, the Waltham Times reported.

The school district has considered the shift in order to allow more time for teaching core subjects. Waltham High ranks low in the measurements the state uses to evaluate public school performance – in the ninth percentile statewide.

But while adding time for core subjects, the seven-period schedule would mean less time for electives. Students and families have strongly opposed the change. At the School Committee’s March 5 meeting, Mendonsa said the proposal would be tabled.
