Waltham Launches Clothing, Small Household Item Recycling

In August, the City of Waltham launched a new curbside recycling program for clothing and a variety of household goods.

WALTHAM, MA — Old clothing and housewares account for approximately 10 percent of the municipal waste stream, according to Waltham City officials. And the average person throws away 68 lbs of clothing per year, meaning some 85 percent of clothing does not get recycled or donated, it gets trashed.

In an effort to address that in Waltham, the city started a new curbside recycling program for clothing and a variety of household goods.

The program is free for anyone. All you have to do is put items into the pink bag that Waltham's Recycling gave out this month and put your clothing, accessories and even some small usable household discards in it and leave it by the curb about 3 feet away from (not inside) the wheeled recycling cart on recycling day. Simple Recycling and Waltham's Recycling Department will do the rest to make sure the items get reused.

This recycling initiative is part of the City’s attempt to reduce Waltham’s trash tonnage and reduce the amount of trash going to landfills. Every Waltham household was mailed a pink bag from Simple Recycling with details.
