Boston- At its annual celebration of Nonprofit Awareness Day on June 9, the Massachusetts Nonprofit Network awarded Junior Achievement of Northern New England, Inc. with the Nonprofit Excellence Award in Board Governance.
At the event, State Treasurer Steve Grossman and Senate President Therese Murray joined hundreds of nonprofit and business leaders, as well as elected officials, at the State House today to celebrate the nonprofit sector, raise awareness of causes throughout the state, and award local nonprofits for their impact. This celebration of Nonprofit Awareness Day, a statewide holiday signed into law by Governor Deval Patrick in 2007, was hosted by the Massachusetts Nonprofit Network and presented by Citizens Bank.
“Nonprofits are the cornerstones of our communities that enrich the lives of all residents in Massachusetts as well as a vital economic engine that employs almost 17% of the state’s workforce,” said Rick Jakious, CEO, Massachusetts Nonprofit Network. “Nonprofit Awareness Day is a special holiday that gives us a chance to recognize the essential role nonprofits play in strengthening the Commonwealth and honor the best of the best work being done by in the nonprofit sector through the Excellence Awards.”

In the past two years, the Board of Directors of Junior Achievement of Northern New England, Inc. (JANNE), which teaches financial literacy, workforce readiness, and entrepreneurship to young people, has been successful in improving organizational effectiveness in predetermined areas: marketing, development, stewardship, board nominations, and special events. Under the Board’s leadership, the organization successfully navigated a major leadership transition and has almost doubled operating surplus, dramatically increased student impact, boosted the number of trained volunteers by 47%, and almost doubled the amount of staff.
At Nonprofit Awareness Day, eight Nonprofit Excellence Awards were presented to nonprofit professionals and organizations from every subsector and each corner of the state for innovative, creative, and effective work being done throughout the Commonwealth. At the event, they told stories illustrating their amazing impact. Excellence Award finalists are nominated by community members and peers and are selected by an independent panel of nonprofit leaders. This year, MNN received a record 209 Nonprofit Excellence Award nominations.
