Waltham’s Moody Street Station Wins 2021 Design Award

WALTHAM, MA — Waltham’s new Moody Street fire station has received a 2021 Station Design Award from Firehouse Magazine in recognition of its outstanding architecture and design.

The Moody Street fire station, designed by Saccoccio & Associates Architects, won the SDA Gold Award for Fire Station Renovation, one of seven possible categories.

“We’re excited to team up with fire departments and architecture firms to present the innovative concepts they have created to keep firefighters trained and healthy while they await the next call to serve their communities,” said Firehouse Editor-in-Chief Peter Matthews in a statement. "As more departments become true all-hazard response agencies, their equipment and training needs grow, and these new facilities keep them response ready while protecting the life-saving equipment safe from the environment.”

Moody Street Fire Station was built in the 1800s, when firefighters would use horse-drawn carts. The city spent years debating how to best upgrade the historic station.

Starting in 2019, the city launched a $9.3 million renovation project to gut and rehab the existing building and add four complete new bays with extra large bay doors. The station officially reopened at the end of June and and the Waltham Fire Department hopes the upgraded building will service the town for at least the next 100 years.

Renovations to the station included gutting the interior, updating the dining and gym areas, and creating four new apparatus bays.

Moody Street fire station was one of over 64 entries for the awards. The SDA uses a panel of six judges, including fire chiefs and architects, to select the winners.
