Waltham School Committee Selects Stigmatine as Preferred High School Site

Despite a unanimous School Building Committee vote last month favoring the current site, the school committee went the opposite way.

WALTHAM, MA – The Waltham School Committee voted Wednesday night on a preferred site plan for a new high school, and the outcome probably wasn't what the School Building Committee was hoping for.

According to the Waltham News Tribune, the committee voted unanimously in favor of the Stigmatine site at 554 Lexington St. to build a new school. This despite a unanimous School Building Committee vote last month selecting the current Waltham High School at 617 Lexington St. as its preferred site.

Waltham Mayor Jeannette McCarthy is in the process of negotiating an $18 million deal to buy the land, which is home to the Stigmatine Fathers religious retreat.

But with the deal still pending, and the possibility of years of legal battles if the owners fight the purchase, the committee acknowledged that they were comfortable falling back on the current site, the Waltham News Tribune reported.
