Waltham School Redistricting Would Move More Than 250 Students

The School Committee voted to accept a redistricting proposal.

Waltham, MA --- In an effort to deal with capacity issues in the Waltham schools, the School Committee last week welcomed a proposal that would move boundary lines for Waltham’s six elementary schools.

The move would shift 256 students to new schools next year, reported the Waltham News Tribune.

George Frost, Waltham Schools’ human resources administrator, told the Waltham Tribune that under the parameters, it was the best solution short-term, but “doesn’t solve the problem forever.”

The committee also voted to build a new elementary school, with its location unknown.

At the beginning of the school year, Drew M. Echelson, Ed.D. superintendent, sent a letter to school families addressing the issue of both overcrowded and underutilized schools, stating, “We understand the urgency of a decision and commit to an aggressive timeline for decision-making that also allows for significant community engagement and is not so urgent that it compromises the quality of the plan.”
