Waltham Student Slowly Improving After Being Hit By Car

A little more , a Waltham student remains at a Boston hospital where he is slowly recovering, his family says.

Alex Cabrera, 15, was struck by a car on Lexington Street on Thursday, May 17, and flown to Tufts Medical Center, where, as of May 24, he remained in stable condition in the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit. Cabrera, an eighth-grade student at , was walking home when he crossed the street, only to be hit by the car.

Cabrera’s family and friends spoke to Waltham Patch from the hospital Thursday night, publicly identifying Cabrera as the victim. 

“He is kicking butt in there. He’s so strong,” said Alex’s mother, Jenny Cabrera.

With steadfast support from family and friends, Alex’s condition has slowly improved since suffering a head injury as a result of the accident, according to his mother.

Thursday was his best day yet since the crash, and since he underwent surgery on his head. Doctors brought Alex out of a medically-induced coma and he has started to respond to commands again, his mother said. He has also started moving one of his arms and legs again. Alex has not spoken since the accident, but Jenny Cabrera said her son is able to understand what people are telling him.

“He is trying to talk,” Jenny Cabrera said.

As for Alex’s outlook, Cabrera said, “It’s going to take time to recover.”
