Waltham's Boston Dynamics Unveils Rolling, Hopping Robot

Footage of the sci-fi terror was leaked in early February, but the robotics company made it official in a video this week.

WALTHAM, MA – It's official – the machines have the upper hand. Waltham-based robotics company Boston Dynamics this week introduced the newest addition to an armada it's unwittingly supplying to the Terminators.

Handle, a rolling, hopping research robot, stands at 6 feet 6 inches tall, travels at 9 mph and boasts a 4-inch vertical. So even though it's built like an NBA player, Handle might consider doing some box jumps before the next combine if it's got hoop dreams.

According to Boston Dynamics, the robot alternates between legs and wheels for flat services, giving it "the best of both worlds."

At a presentation earlier this year, the company's founder Marc Raibert said Handle got its name because Boston Dynamics will eventually have it handling objects.
