WALTHAM, MA — Waltham's a great place to start a business. That's according to a new report out. Verizon partner company Go.Verizon.com just released its second annual Best Small Cities for Small Businesses report for 2019. Waltham made the list as the No. 29 ranked city across the US for small businesses out of about 300 others. That puts Waltham in the top 10 percent across the nation.
Researchers gathered data from nearly 300 cities across the country, focusing on certain factors that would categorize them as “small” meaning, no Silicon Valley on this list without dipping below the mark to “town” status.
According to the organization, the evaluation was based on six ranking factors that indicate the financial climate of each city and gives an overview of its demographics, including education level of the local workforce, in-city commute times, income per capita, broadband access, availability of SBA loans and overall tax friendliness for small businesses.

"It is true that when it comes to places rich with business growth and opportunity, small cities don’t generally come first to mind. But avoiding the chaos and competition of large cities and planting your roots in a quieter, yet equally industrious pocket of the country puts your business in a uniquely advantageous position," according to a statement.
The top 50 cities to start a small business included No. 1: Logan, Utah and No. 2: Sarasota, Florida. Only two cities in the Commonwealth made the list. Waltham at No. 29 and Medford at No. 41.
