WAYLAND, MA — An elementary school in Wayland was named among the best public elementary schools in Massachusetts.
Happy Hollow Elementary School ranked No. 18 in U.S. News & World Report's list of the state's best public elementary schools, released Tuesday.
The school at 63 Pequot Rd. serves students from kindergarten through fifth grade and has a population of 330. The student-to-teacher ratio is 12 to one, according to U.S. News.
Meanwhile, a school in Cambridge claimed the top spot. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. School in Cambridge was named the No. 1 best public elementary school in the Bay State.
Happy Hollow's recognition comes less than a month after Wayland Public Schools was ranked among the best school districts in Massachusetts. Wayland High School was also named among the state's top 15 public high schools in a separate ranking.
U.S. News researchers based the 2027 ranking of the nation's best public elementary schools on the latest publicly available data from state education agencies by RTI International, alongside data from the U.S. Department of Education. In the past, the state reports weren't part of the methodology.
The data from the state agencies provides a more comprehensive assessment of student performance in reading and mathematics across all proficiency levels while continuing to account for student background and absolute performance on state assessments.
"By incorporating direct state data across all proficiency levels, the 2027 rankings offer a richer, more complete picture of how elementary and middle schools are driving student growth," Eric Brooks, U.S. News director of education data analysis, said in a news release.
