WAYLAND, MA — Fire safety education programs in Wayland will receive nearly $8,000 in new state funding.
Wayland was awarded $5,453.62 for the Student Awareness of Fire Education program and $2,492.96 for the Senior SAFE program in fiscal 2027, according to a Tuesday letter from Gov. Maura Healey and Lt. Gov. Kimberley Driscoll to Wayland Fire Chief Neil McPherson. The grants will support fire and life safety education for school-aged children and older residents.
The two awards total $7,946.58. The Massachusetts Department of Fire Services will provide the town with contract terms and other award documents, according to the letter.
The SAFE program provides local fire departments with resources to teach children about fire prevention and how to respond during emergencies. Its curriculum covers 23 fire safety behaviors through age-appropriate lessons, according to the Department of Fire Services.
Meanwhile, Senior SAFE supports education for older adults about risks involving cooking, smoking, home oxygen, electricity and heating. Grant-funded programs may also provide smoke and carbon monoxide alarm installation, battery replacement and other home safety improvements, according to the department.
The fiscal 2027 grant performance period ends June 30, 2027, according to the Department of Fire Services.
