Demystifying Jazz Masterclass

Arts Wayland is delighted to present the first masterclass of its 2026–2027 season, “Demystifying Jazz,” on Sunday, November 1 at 2 pm at the Wayland High School Auditorium. Pianist Neil Olmstead and guitarist Phil Sargent team up for an interactive lecture and performance designed to show just how accessible jazz can be. Beginning with Miles Davis’ mid-1950s “cool jazz” period and continuing through present-day jazz, they’ll explore the origins and forms of jazz standards, the vocabulary of improvisation, and how to follow the form of a tune and listen more deeply to a solo. Neil and Phil will be joined by bassist Greg Loughman and drummer Austin McMahon. Come enjoy an afternoon of wonderful music while uncovering some of the mysteries of jazz!
