"The Death of Ivan Ilyich" Book Night & Discussion Group

Leo Tolstoy’s novella, “The Death of Ivan Ilyich”, is a literary classic whose protagonist, a mortally ill man named Ivan Ilyich, struggles to discover the meaning of life even as he is dying.  Although the book is set in late-nineteenth-century Russia, Ivan Ilyich’s predicament seems, in many ways, contemporary and offers implications for those who work with, or care for people confronting the end of life.

This book night and discussion group will help deepen participants’ understanding of the needs of the dying, and one’s own ability to engage in meaningful conversations with people with life-limiting illness.  Cross-cultural end-of-life issues will also be explored.
