Late Danvers Push Ends Wayland Season in North Final

The Wayland High School boys basketball team fell to the Falcons on Saturday at the Tsongas Center in Lowell.

The Wayland High School boys basketball team know what they were in for heading into the North Division 3 title game. And they got exactly what they expected.

During a hard fought scrap with defending bracket champion Danvers, the Warriors continue their recent comeback trend as they knotted things at 52-52 with less than two minutes remaining. But the team's latest comeback fell just short and the Falcons escaped with a 57-52 win.

Star senior Jaleel Bell poured home 17 points and snagged 10 rebounds despite being heavily guarded throughout. But Danvers' Jake Cawlina drained a clutch three in the closing minutes and Danvers held on to eliminate Wayland.

“We had won five games in a row, coming into this one, being down at the half, so we’re a second half team,” said Wayland head coach Dennis Doherty. “Against a team like Danvers that is that skilled and talented, we needed to play better than we did in the first half. Going down 10 against them and coming back is a very difficult task. We left too many possessions out there in the first half.”
