New Wayland Pool Mural Responds To Hateful Graffiti

WAYLAND, MA — A new mural created in response to two incidents of hateful graffiti at the Wayland Community Pool will be unveiled Sunday.

A ribbon-cutting ceremony will run from 2:30 to 3:30 p.m. on Sunday at the pool, located on the Wayland High School campus at 264 Old Connecticut Path. The event will include remarks from artist Lena McCarthy, student leaders and town officials, along with music and refreshments, according to organizers.

The mural initiative began after the graffiti incidents prompted community discussions about transforming the site into a place representing healing, belonging and connection, according to organizers. A 10-member planning team has coordinated the project over the past year and a half.

McCarthy, a professional muralist, Wayland native and Wayland High School graduate, designed and painted the mural with input from students and other community members. The artwork spans the pool building’s exterior and features plants, a heron, monarch butterflies, water and geometric designs.

“This mural is the result of people deciding that hate would not define our community,” initiative lead coordinator Heidi Heilman said in a news release.

More than 100 people and local organizations have contributed to the project, which has raised over $29,000 toward a $33,000 goal, organizers said. Remaining donations will pay for lighting intended to illuminate the mural and improve visibility around the pool.

The Wayland High School Music Department and Wayland School of Music are scheduled to perform during Sunday’s ceremony. Organizers will also present a plaque recognizing businesses and organizations that supported the project.
