Panera Buys Majority Share in Boston Breakfast-Lunch Chain

Panera, which has a location in Wayland, has the majority share in the five-location Tatte Bakery and Cafe.

MASSACHUSETTS — Panera’s putting its hands into a new venture that is urban and upscale.

The chain has reportedly purchased a majority interest in the Boston-chain Tatte Bakery & Cafe, said Restaurant Business.

The purchase of the five-location breakfast and lunch spot, which has three locations in Cambridge, one in Brookline and one in Boston, is a test in “a possible growth vehicle into residential urban and upscale suburban markets.”

Baker Tzurit Or started Tatte in 2007, baking 20 hours a day in her home kitchen, and bringing her wares to Boston’s farmers’ markets, eventually opening a store in Brookline.
