Tax Rate In Wayland: Annual Meeting Coming Up

Town officials will soon discuss setting the next fiscal year's tax rate, and how properties will be classified.

WAYLAND, MA — One of the most important public meetings for Wayland taxpayers is coming up next week. On Nov. 25, the Board of Selectmen will discuss setting the next tax rate, and how properties will be classified under it.

The meeting will determine the tax rate for fiscal year 2020. The tax rate in 2019 is $18.28 per $1,000 of assessed value. The town calculates the tax rate by dividing the prior fiscal year's tax levy by the town taxable valuation.

The 2019 rate was highest since 2016, but not the highest in recent years — the rate hit $18.42 per $1,000 of assessed value in 1996.

The board will also determine whether to have a single tax rate, or a split rate, which means setting different rates for commercial, residential, and open space properties.

At the upcoming meeting, Wayland residents can submit feedback and ask questions. The meeting happens at 7:15 p.m. on Monday at the Wayland Town Building, 41 Cochituate Road.
