WAYLAND, MA — A newly formed Wayland committee is helping the town observe Hispanic Heritage Month, a 30-day celebration that also includes independence days across Central and South America.

The town's Human Rights, Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Committee (HRDEI) is spearheading this year's observance. The town held its third Community Conversation event on Sunday to discuss the month.

HRDEI Chair Dovie Smith released a statement about the month on behalf of the committee.

"The Wayland Human Rights, Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Committee recognizes Hispanic Heritage Month, which is observed nationally each year from Sept. 15 to Oct. 15," Smith said. "The day of Sept. 15 is significant because it is Independence Day for Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua. In addition, Mexico and Chile celebrate Independence Day on Sept. 16 and Sept. 18, respectively. The HRDEI Committee honors the histories, cultures, achievements and contributions of Latinx people in our town, state and country. We join Wayland in celebrating our community’s diversity."
