ADULT SERVICES

Great Presenters: Transparency of Watercolors

Full-time watercolorist Marla Greenfield shows how the transparency of watercolors can create
beautiful effects by layering and letting the paints blend together on the paper. Through
demonstration and stage-by-stage visuals, she takes you through her painting process, breaking it down into manageable steps. A signature member of the American Watercolor Society, Marla has exhibited in shows nationwide, won numerous awards, and been featured in a number of national publications. Author Talk: Dr. Robin T. W. Yuan

In honor of Asian/Pacific American Heritage Month, Yuan will speak on his book Red Bishop, the story of his grandfather Robin Chen, the last presiding bishop of the Anglican Church in China. Yuan charts Chen's journey from his early childhood years and his youthful conversion to Christianity to his death under house arrest decades later. Dr. Yuan is a graduate of Harvard College and Harvard Medical School. He is an assistant clinical professor of plastic surgery at UCLA and was one of the original participants in the hit TV show, “Extreme Makeover.” Presented in partnership with the Belmont, Maynard and Winchester Public Libraries. Friends Book Sale

It's back! After a hiatus of more than two years, the Friends of the Wayland Library will be holding a book sale. Featuring only material for children and teens, it will be held in the Library's meeting room. You can donate books up until the day before. For more information, contact css11@comcast.net. Saturday, May 14, 1-4 p.m. and Sunday, May 15, 2-4 p.m.

Poetry on the Trail

For National Poetry Month, the Wayland Cultural Council, in partnership with the Library, the Sudbury Valley Trustees, and the Wayland Human Rights, Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Committee, is excited to be sharing eight poems posted along on the trails at Greenways Conservation Area. Look for them on SVT segments of the trails, marked on a map you can pick up at the Library. The parking area for Greenways is at the bottom of Green Way off Cochituate Road. Enjoy the woods and the words.

Attention, Wayland Residents of Chinese Heritage

Whether your family hails from China, Singapore, Taiwan, the United States, or anywhere else, we want to document your experience living in Wayland. We want all Wayland residents, whether next year or a hundred years from now, to hear your voices. We will keep your answers in our historical collection for future generations. This survey will be anonymous in order to encourage candid answers to the questions. You’ll find it on the blog at waylandlibrary.org.

A Chromebook at Home

Or on the road or wherever you need it. We recently revitalized our fleet of circulating Chromebooks with a bunch of newer machines, each in its own travel case. Pair one up with a hotspot for easy Internet access and use practically anywhere you go.

Lamination Available

For just 25 cents a sheet, you can use our nifty little laminator right here in the library. If it's a document 8 ½ x 11 or smaller, and you've always dreamed of having it sealed between two plastic sheets, now that dream can become a reality. Just ask at either the Circ or Ref Desk.

Sewing Machine

We have a beautiful new Singer M2100, just waiting for you to check it out from our Library of Things. It’s lightweight and portable—great for sewing in smaller spaces or for taking to sewing class. There are 63 stitch applications, all with preset stitch length and width, eliminating guesswork. The front-loading bobbin, easy threading, and four-step buttonhole process also make it perfect for the beginner. There’s even an app to help you along.

FOR BABIES, TODDLERS AND PRESCHOOLERS

Storytime with Ms. Carly

Join Ms. Carly in the library for storytime! Children and their caregivers will listen to stories,
sing songs, and perform fun rhymes and movements. We will meet in the Children’s Room. For
babies through preschool age children, with caregivers. Masks are encouraged for everyone
ages 2+. Please register. Tuesdays, May 3, May 10, May 17, May 24, and May 31 at 10:30 a.m.

Storytime with Ms. Pam

Join Ms. Pam in the library for stories, songs, puppets, and activities. We will meet in the
Children’s Room. For ages 2.5 to 5 years with an adult. Masks are encouraged for everyone

Storytime with Obie the Dog

Children will listen to dog stories and have a chance to visit with Obie, a beautiful Samoyed.
Obie will be accompanied by his owner Helen. We will meet in the Raytheon Room. Masks are

FOR ELEMENTARY AGE CHILDREN

Pokemon Card Trading Day

Kids are invited to a Pokémon card trading day at the library. Come with cards you are willing to
trade! We will meet on the green lawn behind the library, weather permitting. For ages 7 to 11.

Lego Club

Children will make fabulous creations out of Legos. This month’s theme: Star Wars! We will
meet in the Raytheon Room. For ages 5 and up, with caregivers. Attendance is limited. Masks

4 th /5 th Grade Book Club

We will be discussing Fish in a Tree by Lynda Mullaly Hunt. We will meet in the Teen Loft.

Make a Japanese Carp Windsock with Ms. Elise

Using watercolors and other paints, children will decorate a Japanese Carp Windsock. The carp
is a symbol of strength and courage in Japan. Placed outside the home, the fish look like they are
swimming upstream while they flutter in the breeze. For ages 4 and up. Please register HERE or

STEAM TEAM: Seeds!

Children will learn all about seeds and then plant seeds in biodegradable containers to take home.
Weather permitting, we will meet outside on the green lawn behind the library. Please register

FOR TEENS

Magic the Gathering

Teens! Play Magic the Gathering with your friends! Bring your own Magic Cards or use ours.
Experienced players and newbies welcome. For teens in grades 6 and up. This event will take
place in the Teen Loft. Please register. Fridays, April 29, May 6, and May 27at 4:30 p.m.

D & D for Teens

Join us for a one-shot Dungeons & Dragons session. Beginners and experienced players
welcome. This class will be run by Wayland staffer and D&D aficionado Sam Korstvedt. We
will be offering two one-shot sessions. Please register for one only. Friday, May 13, or Friday,
May 20, at 4:00 p.m.

Teen No Book Book Club

Teens are invited to the No Book Book Club. There is no assigned reading! We will chat about
books we’ve read, books we want to read, and share recommendations. Hear about upcoming

Daniel's Good Day Storywalk Kickoff Event

Join Ms. Pam (from the library) and Ms. Jodi (from Family Access) at Hannah Williams
Playground to celebrate the opening of the Storywalk of Daniel's Good Day. Walk the storywalk, do the scavenger hunt, and make a paper bag kite! For ages 2 and up, with caregivers. We will meet at the Hannah Williams Playground, 71 Main Street, Wayland.
