Wayland Police Officer Promoted to Sergeant
William Smith was recognized during Monday's Board of Selectmen meeting.
The Board of Selectmen meeting room overflowed Monday night with friends, family and colleagues there to support Wayland police officer William Smith as he was promoted to the rank of sergeant.
Smith joined the in 1994 after serving as a police officer with the Boston Housing Authority, Irving said during the swearing in and pinning ceremony.
With the Wayland PD, Smith serves as a member of the Wayland Police Bicycle Patrol and "is active in promoting the community policing philosophy of the department," according to a press release.

In 2005, Smith was commended for being the first police officer to "successfully use an automated external defibrillator while saving the life of a 74-year-old Wayland woman," Irving said.
Monday night, Town Clerk Lois Toombs performed Smith's swearing in and his daughter, Molly Smith, took part in the pinning ceremony.

The created an opening for a sergeant in the department, which Smith was promoted to fill. Irving said he is currently working through the state's Civil Service process of hiring two additional officers to fill out the police roster.
