Wayland Sets Household Hazardous Waste Day For October

WAYLAND, MA — Wayland residents will have an opportunity in October to safely dispose of hazardous materials found around their homes.

The Wayland Health Department will hold a free Household Hazardous Waste Collection Day from 8 to 11:30 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 17, at the Wayland Department of Public Works Garage, 66 River Road. The event is open only to Wayland residents, and advance registration is required.

Accepted materials include adhesives, oil-based paints, household cleaners and garden fertilizers, according to the town.

Latex paint, propane tanks, computers, televisions, batteries, Styrofoam, asbestos, radioactive waste, infectious or biological waste, prescription medications and commercial hazardous materials will not be accepted.

The Health Department advises residents to leave materials in their original containers with caps and lids tightened. Oil paint, pesticides and household cleaners should be sorted and packed separately in sturdy upright boxes padded with newspaper.

Residents should never mix chemicals and should drive directly to the collection site after loading their vehicles, according to the department.
