Weekly Question: Fees for Private Wells or Lawn Watering?

Wayland's Board of Public Works has begun a process of holding water rate hearings to allow the public to weigh in on the rates that are expected to take effect in September.

During a recent hearing, several factors that impact the town's water rates were discussed by interested residents and board members.

Suggestions that came up included:

• charging fees for private wells since they draw on the public aquifer just like the water supply provided through the Water Department.
• charging an additional fee for people who water their lawns.
• refusing to grant abatements to customers with irrigation systems.
