Arrest Made After Fatal Wellesley Stabbing

The victim was pronounced dead after being taken to Newton-Wellesley Hospital.

WELLESLEY, MA — A resident was arrested Thursday night in connection with a fatal stabbing, according to the Norfolk County District Attorney's Office.

James Floyd Bennett III, 26, was taken into custody following the incident and is expected to be arraigned Friday morning in Dedham District Court. Prosecutors have not yet announced the specific charges he is expected to face.

Wellesley police officers responded to Phillips Park at 11 Maugus Ave., shortly before 6 p.m., after receiving a 911 call requesting assistance.

Responding officers found a 58-year-old man suffering from an apparent stab wound. He was taken to Newton-Wellesley Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.

According to a report from The Swellesley Report, the victim is James Floyd Bennett Jr., the suspect's father.

Investigators remained at the scene for several hours Thursday evening, processing evidence around the park's playground and nearby Brook Path.

The Massachusetts State Police are assisting the Wellesley Police Department with the investigation.

Bennett III graduated from Wellesley High School in 2020.

Authorities said the investigation remains active, and prosecutors have not released a possible motive. Officials said preliminary information indicates there is no ongoing threat to the public.
