(BOSTON) - Much has changed since Representative Danielle W. Gregoire (D-Marlborough) hosted a 2020 Census Kickoff in Marlborough with fellow State Representative Paul Mark back in March, the topic of which was strategies to ensure everyone participate and be counted in the Census. As our state has continued to battle the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic, it has created additional hurdles for proper Census data collection. As such, a federal court issued an order last week which extended the Census deadline, allowing for the collection of online, phone, and mailed self-responses to continue until the end of the month.

The U.S. Census Bureau has created various tools and informative resources to assist residents in the Census process. From an interactive map, allowing users to view current response rates on the national, state, county, and municipal levels, to a social media tool kit, to help spread the word about the census on social media outlets. Additionally, the U.S. Census Bureau has prepared detailed instructions on how to respond to the Census, available in multiple languages. Respondents should have their unique Census ID, which is included on the Census Bureau’s invitation and are encouraged to review the Census questions before responding. If a person needs support and is not comfortable navigating the U.S. Census website, a list of compiled phone numbers can be found here.

“We must ensure that every resident is counted in the 2020 Census,” said Representative Danielle W. Gregoire (D-Marlborough), House Chair of the Joint Committee on State Administration and Regulatory Oversight. “Data collected through the Census determines what our communities receive over the next ten years in federal funding. Our education, transportation and healthcare systems rely on this funding and this data is critical as our state participates in legislative redistricting. It is crucial that every individual in the Commonwealth is counted and I am grateful that data collection efforts will continue until the end of this month.”
