WESTBOROUGH, MA — Drivers traveling near the I-495 and Massachusetts Turnpike interchange should prepare for overnight detours this week as construction work continues on a major state project.
The Massachusetts Department of Transportation announced that the ramp from I-90 eastbound to I-495 northbound (Exit 106) will be closed nightly from 11 p.m. to 5 a.m., beginning Sunday, Apr. 26, through Friday morning, May 1.
The temporary closures are part of ongoing work associated with the I-495/I-90 Interchange Improvements Project, which aims to modernize and enhance safety at one of the region’s busiest highway connections.
During the overnight closures, drivers looking to access I-495 northbound from I-90 east will be detoured onto I-495 southbound. From there, motorists will take Exit 54A in Hopkinton (West Main Street) to turn around and rejoin I-495 northbound.
State officials said clear signage, message boards, and law enforcement details will be in place to guide drivers safely through the detour route.
Motorists traveling through the area should expect delays, reduce speeds, and use extra caution, especially during overnight hours when visibility may be reduced.
All construction activities are weather-dependent and may be affected by unforeseen circumstances or emergencies.
The project will replace the interchange; eliminate the old tooth booth and weaving areas; improve ramp spacing, acceleration and deceleration lanes; add an auxiliary lane from I-495 Northbound to Route 9; and construct new bridges on I-495 over I-90, on I-495 and I-90 over the MBTA/CSX/Amtrak lines, on I-495 Northbound over Flanders Road, and on Fruit Street.
The project is expected to be complete by June 2027.
