WESTBOROUGH, MA — The Westborough Department of Public Works has been nominated for a regional award recognizing a local flood mitigation effort.

Westborough DPW was nominated for the 2026 Management Innovation Award from the New England Chapter of the American Public Works Association for its Pre-Flood Mitigation Program, according to the latest edition of the town's quarterly newsletter. The program was developed by Assistant Director Derek Saari and Tree Warden Kyle Grendell to help reduce flood risks and strengthen community resiliency.

The program uses coordinated work across multiple town departments to identify and address flood risks before storms or other severe weather events. Town officials said the effort has improved Westborough’s ability to protect infrastructure and to prepare for the impacts of flooding.

The APWA New England Chapter’s Management Innovation Award recognizes public works programs that use new approaches to improve services, operations or community outcomes. APWA says it places emphasis on operational efficiency, cost-effectiveness, and service quality through creative ideas and techniques.

The winner is selected once, and the Awards Committee reviews the nominations; the winner will be announced at the annual APWA conference in Houston, TX, in September.
