WESTBOROUGH, MA — The town has again been recognized for its work to maintain and protect its public trees.
Westborough was named a Tree City USA community for the 17th consecutive year on June 16, with the Westborough DPW Forestry Division accepting the award in Springfield during the Arbor Day Foundation’s Tree City Awards, organized by the Massachusetts Department of Conservation and Recreation.
The award recognizes municipalities that show a commitment to urban forestry, tree care and community engagement.
To qualify for Tree City USA recognition, communities must meet four standards: having a tree board or department, maintaining a public tree care ordinance, spending at least $2 per resident on community tree care and holding an Arbor Day observance and proclamation, according to the Arbor Day Foundation.
The Tree City USA program is an annual national recognition initiative designed to raise awareness of the value of community trees and set forestry standards for communities of all sizes.
Westborough officials said the Forestry Division will continue working to keep the town’s urban forest healthy, safe and sustainable.
