WESTBOROUGH, MA — Drivers should expect daytime delays near the I-495/I-90 interchange during bridge demolition work later this month.
MassDOT will close Flanders Road from Washington Street to Connector Road from 5 a.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday, July 18, while crews demolish a section of the I-495 northbound bridge over Flanders Road. Demolition is expected to run from about 6 a.m. to 7 p.m., and I-495 northbound will have lane closures from 5 to 9 a.m., with at least one lane open at all times, MassDOT said.
A detour will be in place during the Flanders Road closure. Drivers heading east of I-495 on Flanders Road will be directed to East Main Street, Route 9 east, Coslin Drive, Washington Street and back to Flanders Road.
Drivers heading west of I-495 on Flanders Road will be directed to Washington Street, Coslin Drive, Route 9 east, a U-turn at Crystal Pond Road, the exit toward Research Drive/Via Connector Road, Computer Drive, Connector Road and back to Flanders Road.
MassDOT said signage, law enforcement details and messaging will be in place to guide drivers through the work area. Drivers should expect delays, reduce speed and use caution.
The work is weather dependent and could be affected by an emergency, according to MassDOT.
The latest ramp opening follows another recent milestone at the interchange. A new I-90 eastbound on-ramp from I-495 southbound, Exit 58, opened last month.
The work is part of the I-495/I-90 Interchange Improvements Project in Hopkinton and Westborough. The project is meant to provide a safer and more efficient interchange, replace the existing interchange, eliminate the former toll booth area and weaving areas, improve ramp spacing and acceleration and deceleration lanes and add an auxiliary lane from I-495 northbound to Route 9, according to MassDOT.
New bridges are also being built on I-495 over I-90, on I-495 and I-90 over the MBTA/CSX/Amtrak lines, on I-495 northbound over Flanders Road and on Fruit Street, according to MassDOT.
MassDOT says construction is ongoing and the project is expected to be completed in summer 2027.
