‘Proud To Be Your Chief’: Westborough Fire's New Leader Sworn In

WESTBOROUGH, MA — Westborough's new fire chief was officially sworn in this week.

Chief Daniel Hehir was sworn in Tuesday during a ceremony at a Westborough Select Board meeting. His appointment follows the retirement of longtime Chief Patrick Purcell, who retired in August.

The Westborough Select Board chose Hehir to serve as the town's next fire chief after publicly interviewing him and Capt. Roger Busha as finalists during a meeting in August.

Hehir has been with the Westborough Fire Department since 2002 and has risen through the ranks from probationary firefighter to chief.

"It is a great day when the department can see one of its own, who started here as a probationary firefighter and through hard work, dedication and a relentless pursuit of excellence become the top dog," Capt. Busha said while giving a speech during Tuesday's ceremony.

Hehir was also recognized by state officials in 2019, when he received an Excellence in Leadership Award for his work providing peer support and critical incident stress management services to firefighters and police officers following traumatic incidents

"Thanks to my family, my wife, my kids are here. It's an honor to this department," Hehir said after being sworn in. "I'm just humbled at the attendance tonight and I'm proud to be your chief."
