Ananthan Sadagopan Wins Westborough Lions Young Ambassador Award

Westborough High School sophomore, Ananthan Sadagopan, has won the Westborough Lions Club Young Ambassador of the 21st Century Award for 2019. He is seen in the above photo with Young Ambassador Chairperson Susan Ash on the left and King Lion Angelo Cavaliere on the right. This prestigious award recognizes young people ages 13-19 for their outstanding community service, leadership, and scholastic achievement. The award is meant to give incentive for youth to commit themselves to service and leadership as all Lions do.

Just a sophomore and amongst eighteen applicants, Ananthan stood out as a student who was committed to serving others, was a peer leader at school and in the community, and excelled in academic pursuits. During the past three years, Ananthan has accumulated over 480 hours of service at home and abroad. Just a small sampling of his activities includes being involved in a self-initiated fund drive raising over $6,000 for a school in India for the visually challenged as part of an organization called VT Seva. Amongst other things, the money was used to purchase the technology required to expand enrollment at the school. He is also a Donor and Community Ambassador for the Red Cross and is active in both the Homework Helpers Club and Debate Club at Gibbons Middle School.

In terms of Leadership, Ananthan is President of the Westborough High School Speech and Debate Club. The club had been defunct, but after restarting it, Ananthan has turned it into one of the largest clubs at the High School. Ananthan is also the President of the WHS Math Team, Vice President of the WHS Key Club, and is involved with research at Glenmark Pharmaceuticals, Northeastern University, and Massachusetts General Hospital, where he leads a computational investigation into the pathogenesis of a tumor.

Scholastically, Ananthan has received top honors in several national and state math, chemistry, and economics exams, has published scientific articles in academic journals, received an award from the American Society of Engineers, and has an exceptional GPA.
