Construction on New Accessible, Larger Welcoming Space Under Way
Groundbreaking Ceremony Held June 23
Construction has begun on a new accessible addition at First United Methodist Church of Westborough following a groundbreaking ceremony last week.
When construction is complete at the end of 2020, visitors will be able to access all levels of the church. There will also be a much much larger gathering space outside the sanctuary, with enough space for after-church functions and meetings; a new nursery; handicap accessible bathrooms on all floors; and a new serving kitchen on the first floor. All of these improvements are meant to make the space more welcoming to church members, accommodating to members of the greater Westborough community like the Boy Scouts who use the church space, and accessible to all who want to come inside.
Members joined staff from FUMC’s construction partners, ACS Group Inc., and architect Doug Sacra of Maple Hill Architects, for a groundbreaking ceremony between Sunday services on June 23. Those present had a chance to sign their names on beams that will be going in the building. Some of those on hand were there when the church moved to its West Main Street location in the 1960s. For Pastor John Wesley Taylor, this project is a long time coming.

“It breaks my heart when I get calls asking if someone in a wheelchair can come to dinners and take part in programs in our lower level fellowship hall because right now, the answer is no. Once this project is complete, the answer will be a whole-hearted yes,” Taylor said.
