WESTBOROUGH, MA — MassTrails has awarded Westborough a more than $11,000 grant to replace a crumbling bridge at the Bowman Conservation Area near Sandra Pond.

The MassTrails grant was one of 81 handed out during an event in Milton on Tuesday. Conservation Director Sheri Widdiss accepted the $11,161 grant on the town's behalf.

With the grant in hand, Westborough will buy a new 25-foot pine bridge that will cross a stream on the southwest side of the conservation area that feeds Sandra Pond. The bridge that crosses the stream is about 40 years old, according to the town.

In addition to the bridge, the town will use some of the grant to add a stone dust path to connect the Bowman Street parking lot paved trail to the bridge.

The MassTrails grant requires Westborough to provide matching funds of $3,126. Town Meeting approved that expense in March.
