Grace Qiu Wins Westborough Lions Youth Speech Contest!
Worcester Academy Sophomore Advances to Region 1 Contest in January
Grace Qiu, a sophomore at Worcester Academy, won this year’s Westborough Lions Youth Speech Contest on Tuesday, November 28, 2023. The contest was held at Central One Federal Credit Union in Westborough. She was one of four high school students from Westborough who participated in the competition. Also in attendance was Massachusetts State Representative, Kate Donaghue, from Westborough and the 19th Worcester District.
This year’s topic was With Which Historical Figure Would You Most Like to Speak? Each student wrote a five-to-eight-minute speech on the topic. Three independent judges critiqued each speech on Delivery, Effectiveness, and Text. The student with the most first place finishes, as deemed by the judges, won the contest. If there had been a tie, a series of tiebreak rules would have been invoked to determine the winner.
Grace will move on to the Region 1 Contest at the end of January. There, she will compete against the winner of the Harvard Lions Club Contest, as well as the winner and runner-up from the Zone 1 Contest, which will include the towns of Grafton, Mendon, Milford, Uxbridge, and Sutton. We wish Grace much luck as she continues on in this state-wide contest.
