Mill Pond Program Showcases Africa

The school's annual Africa United Day was Thursday.

Thursday, in the Mill Pond School cafeteria, visitors tried food from Nigeria. And Liberia. And South Africa. Among other African nations.

And served by students from the sixth-grade Firefly team, wearing costumes representing that country.

The students also created displays of information about their country of focus, including maps, images of the national flag, and economic data.

African dancers and drummers performed in the school auditorium during the afternoon.

The proceeds from this annual Africa United Day benefitted "the Connect-Africa Foundation, which supports thousands of Ugandan children who have been orphaned due to AIDS," sixth-grade team leader Shannon Barca said in a recent e-mail.

"More specifically, all money donated goes directly to a Ugandan student, Emma Kawuki, whom we have been able to sponsor for the last six years.  He has been able to attend and stay in school for the last six years because of our sponsorship.  We are hoping to continue this sponsorship, as well as helping other students in Uganda."
