Shir Joy Chorus Spring Concert

Shir Joy Chorus will present its Spring Concert, "Songs from the Heart: Timeless Traditions in Jewish Music," on Sunday, June 2, 2019 at 7:00 pm at Congregation B'nai Shalom, 117 E. Main St., Westborough, MA. This concert of Jewish music will include part songs, rounds, and a sing-along. Lisa Marcus-Jones will provide the piano accompaniment, and Karen Rothman will be featured on the clarinet. A women's group will perform the heartwarming contemporary piece "May I Suggest," and a men's group will present a comedic version of "Dayenu," the popular Passover song. The chorus will perform in English, Ladino, and Hebrew, and the selections will include a Sephardic folk song, Israeli dances, a setting of Psalm 150, a hymn by Earl Scruggs' son Randy, spirituals, and a Yemenite melody set to poetry from the 10th century in Hebrew with Arabic meter.

Shir Joy Chorus is an adult, transdenominational community chorus, under the direction of Nan A. Kaipainen Gibbons, dedicated to learning, sharing, and performing Jewish music from the rich and varied Judaic cultures of Israel and the Jewish Diaspora. Founded in 2011, it is an independent nonprofit 501(c)3 organization, funded by the Jewish Federation of Central Massachusetts, the Westborough Cultural Council, a member of the Massachusetts Cultural Council, and private supporters. Congregation B'nai Shalom generously donates rehearsal and performance space. The chorus is non-auditioned and is open to all people regardless of ethnicity or religious background.

Shir Joy is a musical organization dedicated to raising awareness and appreciation of the breadth and beauty of Jewish culture through performances and related activities. In addition to its two annual concerts at Congregation B’nai Shalom in Westborough, the Chorus performs at other venues such as Arts in Common in Westborough (for the Westborough Cultural Council),the Jewish Federation of Central Massachusetts' annual meeting, the annual community-wide Yom Hashoah Commemoration, Northborough Community Meals, and the Interfaith Concert in Westborough and Communities of Songs Concert in Worcester, both of which benefit the MA Pastoral Counseling Centers. Most recently, Shir Joy performed at Congregation B'nai Shalom's 40th Anniversary Celebration, a community-wide event.
