Shrewsbury Man Dies After Crash With Backhoe in Westborough

A Shrewsbury man died after injuries sustained in an accident on Friday.

A Shrewsbury man died after his car collided with a backhoe on Otis Street near Smith Valve Parkway in Westborough on Friday.

Robert Shaughnessy, 79, 79 Venus Drive, was treated by paramedics from the Westborough Fire Deparment and rushed to UMass Memorial Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead from his injuries, said Westborough Police Chief Alan Gordon.

The accident happened just before 6 p.m. The backhoe, owned by Grant Service, was operated by Robert Goulding, 36, of Whitinsville.

When police arrived on the scene, they found a 2008 Buick Lucerne with heavy front end damage and a backhoe with damage to its right side. Shaughnessy was treated by paramedics from the Westboroguh Fire Department before

Goulding was treated for non life-threatening injuries.

The accident is being investigated by Westborough Ptl. Cliff Luce and the CEMLEC Accident Reconstruction Team.

Shaughnessy was remembered by his family and friends as having a tremendous sense of humor and heavily involved in community service, reported the Worcester Telegram and Gazette.
